Lula must postpone trip to Washington due to tension in the Middle East

by Marcelo Moreira

The Brazilian government is working on the possibility of postponing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s trip to Washington for a few weeks, initially scheduled to take place later this month. The decision will be debated given the escalation of tensions in the Middle East and diplomatic developments involving the United States in the region.

The president’s aides assess that the intensification of the conflict, with direct repercussions on the White House’s foreign policy, could reduce the political margin for holding a high-level bilateral visit at this time.

The North American administration has prioritized mobilizing efforts to manage the crisis and coordinate actions with strategic partners.

Presidential advisors have already indicated obstacles in making the agendas of the two heads of state compatible. The forecast is that a new date will be established by consensus between the foreign ministries, keeping on the agenda the main issues planned for the meeting, such as economic cooperation, tariff policy and joint action in multilateral organizations.
