Khamenei ‘placed’: how Brazilian funk ended up in videos for and against Iran Brazilian funk verses ended up in videos that praise and criticize Iran, on Iranian, Israeli and other social media profiles, amid the country’s tension and conflict against the USA and Israel. The late Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei is exalted to the sound of the verses “it’s just going to be placed / in the she*ecão’s news”. The base of the song is distorted, in a slow and serious remix, typical of the so-called “Brazilian phonk”, an electronic style increasingly popular in Eastern Europe and Asia, which uses Brazilian funk bases. The same profile, of an anonymous supporter of the Iranian regime, published a video with photos of the Pahlavi family, who commanded the brutal dictatorship overthrown by the 1979 Revolution. “So patriotic, so pure… The last one is waiting for the Israelis to make them king”, ironizes the caption. It is a criticism of Reza Pahlavi, opponent and son of the last shah. The track is “Brazilian phonk”. Images of videos on TikTok and Instagram for and against Iran with a ‘Brazilian phonk’ soundtrack, a style with Brazilian funk vocals and beats Reproduction Opposition beat On TikTok, there is also exaltation of the Pahlavi to the sound of the Brazilian beat. A “fancam” style video (of personal exaltation) celebrates the last shah to the sound of the verses: “My beautiful naughty girl, I roll up this popô / Soca soca soca without caô / She’s horny and I roll up this popô.” The owner of the profile does not identify himself, and only writes جاویدشاه (“long live the king”, in Farsi) at the top of the page. The expression became known as a monarchist slogan in Iran, associated with the shah. There is no sign, however, that he understands the sexual meaning of the Portuguese lyrics. The aggressive beat of the “Brazilian phonk” seems to be enough to give the sense of strength and vigor attributed to Pahlavi. Likewise, an apocryphal pro-Israel profile used this aggressive beat to extol the Israeli army’s fighter jets. “Hold on”, says the verse in the background. Lost authorship In general, “Brazilian phonk” DJs do not identify the owners of the vocals in the songs. These are pieces of funk vocals that circulate on the internet, whose original authorship is difficult to recover. There are also war scenes with beatings on the other side. The “Woldwar.33” profile shows a missile exchange that, in his account, ends in Iranian victory. Funk in Portuguese talks about “hitting head on”. The raid energizes women against the regime known for its oppression of women. Iranian-British Romina dances to the funk song “No batidão” and writes: “That’s me at the whole party when Iran is free.” The same song is used by the troll battalion. An anonymous humor profile shows Israel’s leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, with the caption: “While the global leftist media 🏳️calls him a war criminal… Bibi is out there releasing the heaviest Brazilian phonk.” A montage of Netanyahu sings the verses: “She goes down, she goes up, at the dance it’s pressure / Beautiful, dangerous girl, steals my heart/ She bounces, she keeps playing, she doesn’t lose her reason / In the beat, in the beat, just pure temptation…”
