IT’S #FACT: Cemetery in Jamaica has ‘totems’ with life-size photos of buried people

IT’S #FACT: Video shows tombs with totems of the deceased in a cemetery in Jamaica Reproduction A video is circulating on social media that shows a cemetery in Jamaica full of cardboard totems, made in life size, to represent the people buried there. IT’S #FACT. seal fact g1 ▶️ What’s the video like? The video was published in July 2025 on TikTok and went viral again this month on social networks such as X and Instagram. A post from The video displays numerous cardboard totems, with life-size printed photos, of the people buried at the site. One of the tombstones cites, in English: “Kevin Cunningham SR 2.23.1992 – SS 2.21.2025 – Kemical”. ✅ Why is it a fact? The video was recorded at the Annotto Bay cemetery, in the northeast region of the country. According to a report in the local newspaper “Jamaica Observer”, totem poles have become a popular tradition there, to help locate graves and keep the memory of the deceased alive. An employee explained, in an interview, that the relatives of the buried people themselves choose the photos, which are then transformed into large 2D images. To fix them, a steel rod is cemented into the grave. To find the cemetery in the video, Fato ou Fake searched Google for the name “Kevin Cunningham”, which appears engraved on the tombstone. The result showed reports from Jamaican press outlets about the young man, who died, aged 28, on February 21, 2025. According to reports, he was shot during a police operation at an unauthorized ceremony to honor the death of a reggae artist from the region. Police alleged that Cunningham pointed a firearm at one of the officers, who responded and shot the young man. A pistol was seized at the scene. Residents protested against this version presented, alleging abuse of authority. According to them, the boy did not threaten the police at any time.
