It is #FAKE that video shows Dubai airport in flames after drone attack; record is of a fire in a market in 2020 Reproduction A video is circulating on social media that supposedly shows Dubai airport, in the United Arab Emirates, in flames after a drone attack recorded in the early hours of this Monday (16). It’s #FAKE. g1 🛑 What’s the video like? Published on X this Monday (16), the post has the following caption: “Dubai international airport is on fire. All because of one man’s recklessness.” Filmed from a car on an avenue, the images show a building completely engulfed in flames, with dense smoke coming directly from the site. As the vehicle approaches, it is possible to see police cars and the fire-damaged structure. Despite being true — and not a production of artificial intelligence, for example — the record was now shared out of context. In fact, the recording shows a fire that hit a market in Ajman, in the United Arab Emirates, in August 2020 (read more below). This Monday, Dubai International Airport was temporarily closed after a drone attack on a nearby fuel tank, according to the Reuters news agency. Suspended flights were gradually resumed. ⚠️ Why is this fake? The video shows a large fire that hit a fruit and vegetable market in Ajman, on August 5, 2020. The establishment had been closed for four months as precautionary measures against the Covid-10 pandemic. There were no victims. To find the origin of the content, Fato ou Fake used the InVID tool to fragment the video into “frames” (static images). Then, he did a reverse search on Google Lens for these images. This research serves to check whether the content had previously been reproduced by reliable sources – and in what context. The results showed posts and reports from press vehicles with similar images of the fire in the market. Afterwards, Fato ou Fake searched Google Street View and confirmed the exact location of the recording. Google Maps images from 2016 show the same direction sign shown in the video of the fire. Furthermore, it was also possible to identify the facade of the “Salem Shopping Center”, a shopping center that was next to the market (see below). Images from Google Maps (bottom frame) confirm that fire video (top frame) was recorded in the Ajman market.
