In the previous year, North Korea had been the constant target of US criticism and sanctions for carrying out several missile tests (read more below). ⚠️ Why is this fake? The statement was made on January 1, 2018, during Kim Jong-un’s New Year’s speech, and not after this Sunday’s military exercises. At the time, the leader stated: “The entire territory of the United States is within reach of our nuclear weapons, I always have a nuclear button on my office desk. And that is reality, it is not a threat.” In his speech, he stated that he would only press the button if the country’s security was threatened. In response, US President Donald Trump said he also had a button, but that his was “much bigger and more powerful.” In 2017, the Asian country conducted six tests that demonstrated the technological advances of its nuclear program. The UN Security Council imposed three sets of economic sanctions against the country. The escalation of tension was strengthened by exchanges of attacks and insults between Trump and Kim Jong-un. In his first speech to the United Nations General Assembly, the American declared that he would “totally destroy” North Korea. In response, Kim said that Trump would pay dearly for the statement and even called him “senile mentally disturbed”. After months of friction, the leaders began to grow closer throughout 2018. In June, they met in person in Singapore to discuss ending the nuclear weapons program. Weeks later, the two met again in the Demilitarized Zone between the Koreas. After a symbolic handshake, Trump crossed the border and became the first American president to set foot on North Korean soil. This week, after the military exercises, Kim Yo-jong, sister of the North Korean leader, declared that the movement could lead to “terrible consequences”, in a note published in KCMA, the country’s official news agency. This Wednesday (11), Kim Jong-un watched cruise missile tests alongside his daughter following Sunday’s military exercises. The country typically responds to both sets of training with its own weapons tests.
