Israel bombs Beirut after Hezbollah offensive

Israeli fighter jets carried out attacks against Lebanon, including targets in the capital, Beirut, after shots by the extremist group Hezbollah against its territory during the early hours of Monday (2) in the Middle East. At least 31 people died and another 149 were injured.

Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shiite extremist group that is an ally of the Iranian regime, confirmed that it had launched drone and rocket attacks against northern Israel in retaliation for the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The group also claims that the attack was a response to Israeli bombings that frequently occur in southern Lebanon, even after a ceasefire agreed between the parties. This was the first time that Hezbollah launched an attack on Israel after the official end of the conflict. According to Israel, the attacks were intercepted or reached uninhabited regions. Tel Aviv also claims that the offensives in Beirut targeted Hezbollah facilities.

According to local Lebanese media, the country’s Minister of Justice ordered the arrest of those responsible for launching rockets into Israel. Lebanese security sources told Reuters that Israel had struck the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold.
