Born in 1959 in the historic city of Meybod, in the central Iranian province of Yazd, Alireza Arafi is 65 years old and was born into a religious Islamic family. His father, Ayatollah (Sheikh Haji) Mohammad Ibrahim Arafi, is generally portrayed in Iranian state media as being close to the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
