Iranian politician considered as new leader denies negotiations

The president of Iran’s parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who, according to a report on the Politico website, is being considered by the United States as the new leader of the Persian country, denied this Monday (23) that negotiations are taking place with Washington to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the current war in the Middle East.

“There were no negotiations with the US, and fake news is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped,” Ghalibaf wrote on his X profile.

Yesterday, the website Politico reported that the Donald Trump administration was evaluating the president of the Iranian parliament as a potential partner and even future leader of the country.

“He is an interesting option,” said one of the government officials who were sources for the report, without their names being published. “He is one of the most important… But we need to test him and we cannot rush.”

Yesterday, Trump said on the Truth Social network that Washington and Tehran had “very good and productive conversations” over the weekend and that, therefore, he suspended for five days his plans to attack Iran’s energy infrastructure if the ayatollahs’ regime does not completely reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Around 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passes through this passage, almost completely closed by Iran after the start of the conflict with the USA and Israel.

Later, in a conversation with journalists, the American president stated that the United States is negotiating with an “important figure” in the Iranian regime to try to end the war, but that this person would not be the new supreme leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei.

Trump, however, did not name the Iranian official allegedly involved in the negotiations.
