Iran rejects Trump ceasefire plan

by Marcelo Moreira

The Iranian regime rejected this Wednesday (25) the ceasefire proposal presented by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and responded with a five-point counterproposal.

An unidentified Iranian regime official expressed this position in a statement on the Iranian state broadcaster in English, Press TV, reproduced by international agencies.

“Iran will end the war when it chooses to do so and when its own conditions are met,” the official said.

The five points of Iran’s counterproposal, according to Press TV, are: suspension of the “assassinations” of members of the regime; measures to ensure that no further wars are waged against the country; “reparations” for the conflict; the end of hostilities; and the “exercise of Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz”.

Earlier, two Pakistani government officials confirmed to the Associated Press that Iran had received Trump’s proposal.

Without official confirmation from Washington, the two Pakistani officials (who spoke to the AP on condition that their names not be disclosed) reported some points of the American proposal.

Among them would be the relief of American sanctions against Iran, civil nuclear cooperation between the two countries, the reduction of the Iranian nuclear program, monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), limits on the Iranian missile program and the total release of ship access to the Strait of Hormuz.

Around 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passes through this passage, almost completely closed by Iran after the start of the conflict with the USA and Israel.

An Egyptian government official told the AP that Trump’s proposal also called for an end to arms shipments to Tehran’s partner terrorist groups, such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
