Hyundai has designed a specialized vehicle to intervene in dangerous situations and guarantee greater safety for South Korean firefighters. Delivery of the robots took place at the end of February.
The multinational group donated four auxiliary robots to the National Rescue Headquarters 119 in Namyangju City and two others to the North Chungcheong Province Fire Brigade. They were first deployed on January 30.
Over the past ten years, the Korean National Fire Agency estimated that about 1,788 firefighters were injured or killed while fighting fires.
The new vehicles are designed to respond to the early stages of fires, providing on-site information to firefighters and operating in environments with extreme conditions for the human body.
Hyundai developed the “robot firefighters” based on the HR-Sherpa military vehicle, developed by Hyundai Rotem.
They are equipped with infrared cameras with live transmission, allowing firefighters to map potential victims to be rescued.
The vehicles are equipped with powerful water jets used to both extinguish the flames and cool the robots.
The group said they can maintain a temperature of 50 to 60°C, even in conditions where fire can reach 800°C.
