A project led by NAVAIR and industry partners upgraded the avionics, electrical systems, and navigation systems of aircraft previously used on U.S. presidential missions.
The U.S. Navy, through the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), is completing the modernization of the VH-3A Sea King helicopter, which is closely associated with the U.S. presidential mission, and preparing to return the aircraft to the Egyptian Air Force.
This work was performed by the PMA-226 Office of Hostile and Special Aircraft, in collaboration with the NAVAIR Office of Security Cooperation and Clayton International.
According to an official statement, the project was completed in February 2026 and aimed to modernize the aircraft, which is considered a critical asset to Egypt’s aviation power, while strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
According to NAVAIR, the modernized aircraft is BuNo 150615 and is of high historical value. This helicopter was originally delivered to the United States Marine Corps and supported presidential missions during the administrations of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon. During President Nixon’s visit to Egypt in 1974, this aircraft was presented to President Anwar Sadat as a diplomatic gesture and was later incorporated into Egypt’s aviation fleet.
This modernization is characterized by a combination of the existing airframe structure and the latest systems. Key upgrades cited by NAVAIR include a new electrical architecture, state-of-the-art avionics with a digital cockpit (glass cockpit), and improvements to communications and navigation systems.
On February 2, 2026, the Egyptian Air Force conducted an acceptance and validation flight to verify the helicopter’s performance after modernization.
After final installation of the custom VIP interior is completed, the VH-3A will be transported back to Egypt and resume operations. According to NAVAIR, this delivery symbolizes the continuation of defense cooperation between Washington and Cairo and is an example of combining historic value with cutting-edge operational capabilities.
VH-3A Sea King

The VH-3A Sea King was originally developed for maritime missions. Sikorsky H-3 Sea King It is a VIP transport model derived from the series. According to NAVAIR, the VH-3A is a modified version for short-range presidential transport and preceded the VH-3D in that role. According to official records, only eight VH-3As were built for this VIP mission, which explains the symbolic and historical value of the aircraft being returned to Egypt.
