The project, led by NAVAIR with industrial partners, is updating the avionics, electrical and navigation systems of an aircraft that was used on a United States presidential mission before being transferred to Egypt.

The United States Navy, through Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), has completed the modernization of a VH-3A Sea King helicopter historically associated with American presidential missions and is now preparing to return the aircraft to the Egyptian Air Force.

The work was performed by the PMA-226 program office, which is responsible for adversary and special aircraft, in collaboration with the NAVAIR Security Cooperation Office and the company Clayton International.

According to an official statement, the project was completed in February 2026 and aims to renew assets considered important for Egyptian aviation, while strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

According to NAVAIR, the modernized aircraft is BuNo 150615, a unit of high historical value. This helicopter was originally delivered to the United States Marine Corps to support presidential missions during the administrations of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon. In 1974, during Nixon’s visit to Egypt, the plane was given to President Anwar Sadat as a diplomatic gesture, and then became part of the Egyptian airline.

This latest refurbishment combines the old airframe with modern systems. Among the updates NAVAIR mentioned are a new electrical architecture, a modern avionics package with a glass cockpit layout, and improvements to communications and navigation.

On February 2, 2026, the Egyptian Air Force conducted an acceptance verification flight to validate the helicopter’s performance after modernization.

After final installation of the custom VIP interior, the VH-3A is scheduled to be shipped back to Egypt, where it will return to service. For NAVAIR, the handover also symbolizes the continued defense partnership between Washington and Cairo, combining historical value with updated operational capabilities.

The VH-3A Sea King is the executive transport variant of the family Sikorsky H-3 Sea Kingwhich was originally developed for naval missions. According to NAVAIR itself, the VH-3A was a modified version for short-range presidential transportation, before that role was later carried out by the VH-3D. Official records and historical documentation of the aircraft show that only eight VH-3A units were built for this VIP transport role, which helps explain the symbolic and historical relevance of the units returned to Egypt.
