Project led by NAVAIR with industrial partners has upgraded avionics, electrical systems and navigation on an aircraft that previously served on US presidential missions before being transferred to Egypt.

The US Navy, through the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), has completed the modernization of a VH-3A Sea King helicopter historically associated with US presidential missions, and is now preparing to return the aircraft to the Egyptian Air Force.

The work was carried out by the PMA-226 office, responsible for adversary and specialized aircraft, in cooperation with NAVAIR’s Office of Security Cooperation and the company Clayton International.

According to the official announcement, the project was completed in February 2026 and aimed to upgrade an aircraft considered important to Egyptian aviation, while strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

According to NAVAIR, the modernized aircraft is BuNo 150615, a specimen of great historical value. The helicopter was originally delivered to the United States Marine Corps to support presidential missions during the administrations of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon. In 1974, during Nixon’s visit to Egypt, the aircraft was presented to President Anwar Sadat as a diplomatic gesture and thus became part of Egyptian aviation.

The recent modernization combined an older hull structure with modern systems. Among the upgrades mentioned by NAVAIR are a new electrical architecture, a modern avionics package with a digital cockpit (glass cockpit), as well as improvements in communication and navigation systems.

On 2 February 2026, the Egyptian Air Force conducted a verification and acceptance flight to validate the performance of the helicopter after the modernization.

Following the final installation of a bespoke VIP interior, the VH-3A will be transported back to Egypt, where it will resume service. For NAVAIR, the delivery also represents a symbol of the continuation of defense cooperation between Washington and Cairo, which combines historical value with updated operational capability.

The VH-3A Sea King is a VIP transport variant derived from Sikorsky H-3 Sea King– family, originally developed for maritime missions. According to NAVAIR, the VH-3A was a modified version for short-range presidential transport, which preceded the VH-3D in this role. Official and historical records show that only eight examples of the VH-3A were built for this VIP role, which helps explain the symbolic and historical significance of the helicopter being returned to Egypt.
