On Thursday (19th), a freight train derailed in San Francisco de los Romos, Aguascalientes. About 24 of the 85 trains went off the track, and at least one person died. Seven people, mostly immigrants, were injured.
Authorities said one of the injured was from El Salvador and the rest were from Honduras. The nationality of the person killed in the accident has not been confirmed.
Video shows the moment the locomotive derailed, sending up dust and crashing into an embankment.
The train belongs to Ferromex, Mexico’s largest rail freight company. State Civil Defense Coordinator Eduardo Muño said Peromex had to clear the scene and check for additional fires.
Authorities believe that inadequate management of the track in question may have been the cause of the derailment. The investigation into the accident is currently ongoing.
