What we know about the group of seven dogs in Changchun, China Posts are circulating on social media with a video of seven dogs walking on the side of a highway in China at night. Some captions describe the dogs escaping from a kidnapping and traveling 17 kilometers to return home. According to these allegations, criminals wanted to either sell the animals or “supply the clandestine meat trade”, which was denied by the Chinese media. The publications have gone viral on Instagram, Threads, X, TikTok and Facebook in recent times — a single post from this Monday (23) received 25 million views. In the comments section, users wrote “very clever” and “how cute”, but many questioned whether the episode was true or an artificial intelligence (AI) production. See below what we know about the case: Seal ‘What we know’ g1 Fato ou Fake found the first publication of a video with the same scenes on Douyin (version of TikTok used in China), shared on March 15. To do this, it was necessary to search for the terms “7只狗回家”, something like “7 dogs come home”, and search for the oldest content available. In the caption, the author of that post wrote that the episode occurred on a highway in the region of Changchun city, in Jilin province: “Last night, in Changchun, about 300 meters from the border between Changshuang and Jingyue highway, I found seven dogs by chance. There were German shepherds, golden retrievers, labradors and others. Why were there seven dogs? Does anyone know what happened?” On March 19, the profile shared a slightly longer video of the scene – this ended up being the most viral recording on social media. The content soared on Douyin, garnering more than 2 million likes. After that, others spread across different platforms. Published this Monday, one of them has the following caption in English: “Seven dogs stolen from their owners went viral after escaping from an illegal transport truck and returning home. They traveled around 17 km together, led by a corgi, crossing highways and fields, and are now back safely with their respective owners.” On the same day, a post in Portuguese on Instagram described: “According to reports from the owners, the animals had been taken to supply the clandestine dog meat trade.” But Chinese state media disputed these versions, citing a report published on Monday by the newspaper “China Jilin Net”. According to this report, volunteers searched the region with drones and mobilized to find the group. The vehicle reported that the dogs belonged to residents of villages close to the place where the video was recorded. The owners said that the German shepherd was in heat, which would have attracted the other dogs. The report also mentions that, on Saturday (21), the official channel of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Jilin Province declared that the kidnapping allegations were nothing more than rumors.
