Socialist Emmanuel Grégoire celebrates victory in Paris exit polls indicate that the left-wing coalition candidate won the second round of elections in the French capital. Reuters/Sarah Meyssonnier Emmanuel Grégoire, from the Socialist Party, won the race for mayor of Paris this Sunday (22), according to two exit polls. He defeated former conservative minister Rachida Dati. Grégoire’s victory consolidates the left’s control over the French capital, where the Socialist Party has been in power for 25 years. Mayoral candidate Rachida Dati, supported by the Republicans (LR) and MoDem parties, makes a statement after the first projections indicate her defeat in the second round of municipal elections in the French capital, on March 22, 2026. Reuters/Benoit Tessier Thermometer for 2027 The second round of French municipal elections mobilized almost 17 million voters in 1,580 municipalities – from a total of approximately 35 thousand communes in the country. The election is considered the last major test at the polls before the 2027 presidential election. This Sunday’s results serve to measure the fragmentation of the French political scene and the strength of the ultra-right National Rally (RN) party. Although the RN maintained strongholds in the Mediterranean, the party faced difficulties advancing in large urban centers, where left-wing coalitions came together to try to block its rise. The election also has a direct impact on the national Parliament. In France, elected mayors and municipal councilors will now act as the electoral college responsible for choosing members of the Senate (the country’s upper house). Electoral participation The participation rate was around 57%, a level similar to that recorded in the first round, on the 15th. The number is higher than the 2020 election — heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic —, but remains below the 62.1% recorded in the 2014 municipal elections. See the videos that are trending on g1
