Robots delivering food in Chicago and Detroit (USA) were filmed destroying bus stops and hitting pedestrians on city sidewalks.
according to CBS Chicago the robots belong to two robot companies, Serve Robotics and C Robotics. One of them was seen breaking the glass at a bus stop last Sunday, while another was involved in a similar incident on Tuesday afternoon.
A video of Sunday’s incident showed the delivery robot “Nasir” from Serve Robotics drive into the glass window at a bus stop. The crash left shards of glass scattered on the pavement and on top of the robot, which then attempted to drive over the debris.
On Tuesday, a delivery robot was off C Robotics also involved in a similar incident after vandalizing a bus stop in another part of the city. “It happens all the time – every time you look up, the robot drives by and hits people,” said the local barber Anthony Spaulding to CBS.
Both tech companies issued statements saying they were aware of the incidents, quickly cleaned up and are now investigating. Both C Robotics and Serve also covers the costs of repairing the bus stops damaged by their robots.
The robots off C Robotics monitored virtually by humans, while Serve’s robots operate fully autonomously unless human intervention is required.
The two companies currently operate in parts of Chicago under a robot food delivery pilot program that was approved in 2022. Since then, a petition to pause the program has garnered more than 3,700 signatures.
