“Cuba is living its last moments,” Trump tells Latino leaders

by Marcelo Moreira

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Saturday (7) that the Cuban regime “is living its last moments”. The statement was made during the event called “Shield of America”, in which the North American president receives, in Miami, Latin American leaders to launch a coalition whose objective is to combat cartels on the continent.

In a speech about what Trump classified as “a great victory in Venezuela, the American stated that, after the resolution of the conflict in Iran, the North American government should deal with the Cuban issue “in the coming days”.

“They [o regime de Cuba] They are at rock bottom, they have no money, they have no oil, they have a bad philosophy. They want to negotiate and they are negotiating with Marco Rubio. I’ve been hearing about Cuba for 50 years, but the country is on its last legs and will have a new life,” said the Republican.

Trump has intensified his rhetorical attacks on the small Central American island in recent weeks. The Cuban dictatorship has faced — since the fall of the Maduro regime in Venezuela — serious supply crises.

The oil embargo imposed by the US, as well as the end of remittances from Mexico’s global supply — after pressure from Trump — accentuated the shortage of consumer goods, economic instability and the exodus of Cuban citizens.

Fighting cartels

During this Saturday’s event, Trump also highlighted that the US will work together with countries participating in the “Shield of America” — mostly governed by the Latin right, such as Argentina, El Salvador and Chile — to eradicate the problem of cartels and drug trafficking across the American continent.

“They threaten your police. Our forces have already worked to combat this, but we are going to deepen and expand”, denounced Trump. “We have to eradicate them, they are getting worse and taking control of Mexico. We cannot allow them, they are too close to us”

The meeting is part of a series of measures by the US government that are part of the so-called “Donroe Doctrine”, the current president’s version of the Monroe Doctrine, created in the 19th century, whose objective is to intervene in countries in the Western Hemisphere, in accordance with US interests. The new version promises to increase American security and reduce China’s influence in the Americas.
