Images released in March 2026 indicate that the Chinese J-16D electronic warfare fighter may have been seen in flight for the first time equipped with PL-15 long-range air-to-air missiles.
Until then, this weaponry had only appeared attached to the aircraft in static displays during aeronautical events, which makes the recent record particularly relevant for military analysts.
Military aviation experts point out that the aircraft photographed carried two PL-15s under its wings, as well as three electronic jamming pods from the RKZ930 series. The J-16D is a variant dedicated to electronic warfare based on the J-16, derived from the Su-27, and differs by removing some traditional systems, such as the infrared sensor and the internal cannon, to accommodate equipment aimed at jamming and supporting electronic combat.
Despite the prominence of the new images, analysts consider it possible that the use of these missiles by the model has been taking place for some time in tests or exercises. This is because the PL-15 is already part of the arsenal of the standard version of the J-16 and, in theory, its integration into the specialized variant would not represent a complex change. Furthermore, there are doubts about previous records that could confuse the PL-15 with the LD-8A anti-radar missile, revealed only years later.

The J-16D also plays a strategic role by working in conjunction with the J-20 stealth fighter, providing electronic support during aerial operations. This type of mission involves neutralizing or confusing enemy radars and defense systems, in addition to opening the way for other aircraft in high-intensity combat scenarios, consolidating the model as an important piece within China’s electronic warfare capabilities.

AS far as I remember the first image of a J-16D carrying two PL-15 AAMs under its wings and three RKZ930-xx jammer-pods.
Would be interesting to know, if the J-16D has also a new ARMs available – maybe even the PL-15-based LD-8A.
