China has unveiled two new Type 055 class destroyers, bringing the number of ships of this model in service with the People’s Liberation Army Navy to ten.
The vessels, identified as Dongguan (109) and Anqing (110)appeared for the first time in official images during naval exercises broadcast on state television.
The ships were shown during joint training at sea together with other naval units, in operations aimed at testing combat readiness and integration between different platforms. according to Chinese military analysts The Type 055 destroyers are among the most powerful surface warships currently in use by the country.
Before the arrival of the new units, the fleet consisted of eight destroyers of this class—Nanchang, Lhasa, Anshan, Wuxi, Dalian, Yan’an, Zunyi, and Xianyang—divided between the Northern and Southern Naval Commands. Now the two new ships have been assigned to the Eastern Theater Command, which means that all three main naval commands in China now operate this model.
With a displacement of around 10,000 tons, the Type 055 destroyers are designed for multi-role missions, including air defense, anti-ship combat and attack against land targets. Equipped with vertical launch systems for various types of missiles, these ships can also operate alongside aircraft carriers, thereby strengthening both the offensive and defensive capabilities of Chinese naval groups.
