The French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle visited the port of Malmo in southern Sweden for the first time, a symbolic and strategic move to strengthen relations with the Nordic region.

The visit by the aircraft carrier, France’s main battleship and core force, is part of the ‘LA FAYETTE 26’ mission to focus operations in the North Atlantic and strengthen cooperation with European allies.

The aircraft carrier strike group includes the Royal Netherlands Navy’s HNLMS Evertsen frigate, while other ships are moving to Copenhagen to expand their diplomatic and military agenda in the Baltic Sea region. As this visit coincided with the final stages of a program in which Sweden decides to introduce a new frigate, some are interpreting that France intends to strengthen its competitiveness in FDI projects.

Despite the possible commercial aspects, French authorities emphasize that the main purpose of the operation is to strengthen NATO’s defense and deterrence posture, expand interoperability between allies, and contribute to European maritime security. France has continued to expand its presence in the Nordic region since 2022, demonstrating the region’s increasing priority.

Beyond a simple port call, Charles de Gaulle’s visit to Malmo is evaluated as a clear example of naval diplomacy. By deploying its most powerful ship, the fleet’s only surface force playing a direct role in nuclear deterrence, Paris is demonstrating its strategic will, strengthening alliances and projecting influence in an increasingly sensitive region in terms of European security.
