Blackout in Cuba: two thirds of the island is without power

The country’s eight thermoelectric plants, almost all of which opened in the 1980s and 1990s, regularly suffer breakdowns or need to remain closed for long periods of maintenance. In February, the entire eastern region of the island, where Santiago de Cuba, the country’s second city, is located, was left in the dark due to another network failure.
