Leaders from several countries echoed in statements the attack launched by the USA and its ally in the Middle East, Israel, this Saturday (28) on Iran. The capital, Tehran, and several other important cities were attacked. Russia seized the moment to challenge the US.
“The USA is only 249 years old. The Persian Empire was founded more than 2500 years ago. Let’s see what happens in about 100 years…”, the vice-president of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, said on his X account. He also stated that the peace talks held by US President Donald Trump were a “dissimulation” and ironically referred to Trump as a “pacifist” who once again “showed what he came for”.
In an official statement, Russia condemned the attack. “It leaves no doubt that this is a planned and unprovoked act of armed aggression against a sovereign and independent state, a member of the UN,” said the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the “current escalation” in the Middle East is “dangerous for everyone” and “must stop”, in addition to calling for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, according to the Efe agency.
In a message on his X account, he reiterated that “the start of a war between the USA, Israel and Iran” has “serious consequences for international peace and security”.
“The current escalation is dangerous for everyone. It needs to stop. The Iranian regime needs to understand that it has no other option but to start negotiations,” declared the president.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated that his country would not accept being drawn into an adventure that threatens its “security” and “integrity”, in a statement that was interpreted as a message to the terrorist group Hezbollah, financed by the Iranian regime.
“I reiterate that we will not accept anyone dragging the country into adventures that threaten its security and unity,” Salam said in a statement sent to Reuters.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said his country “understands” the security reasons and “prolonged frustration” that led Israeli and American forces to launch the attack, although he added that military force “must always be a last resort.”
“We understand the profound security imperatives and prolonged frustration with Iran’s refusal to engage in constructive dialogue, which motivated this line of action, although we maintain that military force must always be a last resort, in accordance with international law,” the Belgian minister declared on his social media.
Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised its citizens in Iran, estimated at 158, to “leave the country.” Travel advisories are already at the highest alert level, which “completely advises against traveling to Iran”
