With the resumption of work in the Legislature, deputies and senators are organizing themselves to hear, next Thursday (5), the testimony of Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master, at the INSS CPMI. They will also be heard, as witnesses, businessman Maurício Camisotti and also the president of the National Social Security Institute, Gilberto Waller Júnior.
The board decided to summon Vorcaro due to the loan contracts that Banco Master had in its portfolio and were suspended from the INSS due to a lack of proof of documentation that would guarantee the consent of the retirees.
In an interview with Paula Valdez, on Tarde Band News, the vice-president of CPMI, deputy Duarte Jr. (PSB/MA) explained why the Banco Master case fits into CPMI’s line of work.
“Banco Master is one of these institutions that is suspected of carrying out insurance fraud, with social benefits based on data and information obtained illegally within the INSS. Therefore, Banco Master is already within this scope of investigation.”
The deputy also defended that the investigation into INSS fraud already has a Commission structure and has the same objective as another possible CPI from Banco Master, also discussed in Congress.
“If there is a CPI from Banco Master, it won’t interfere with anything, on the contrary, there are more advisors, there are more deputies, there are more jurists dedicated to solving this problem, I don’t see competition, on the contrary. I see that the more they can investigate, the better it will be for the public interest and for the Brazilian people. Now, within the INSS CPMI, we already have this legitimacy. That’s why we agreed on this call within the commission. Daniel Vorcaro’s call happened unanimously.”
This Tuesday, the president of the Commission, Senator Carlos Viana, stated in a letter sent to Minister Dias Toffoli, of the Federal Supreme Court, that the testimony of Daniel Vorcaro, president of Banco Master, is of great importance to the commission. In the document, the senator asks the Supreme Court minister for authorization so that Vorcaro can be released to testify at the CPMI as a witness.
The vice-president of the CPMI said that the deponents could even obtain a habeas corpus in the STF, but defended the legitimacy of the commission in a tone that follows the saying that “those who should not have no fear”.
“They can be summoned and can appear due to this summons or they can obtain total release from the judiciary. But what is the purpose of this decision? What is the problem with a CPMI, a mixed parliamentary committee that has legitimately elected deputies and senators, to hear these testimonies?”
Vorcaro was arrested in November last year after trying to leave the country amid investigations into crimes against the financial system. He was released ten days later and is now under house arrest.
The owner of Master is accused of fraud worth R$12 billion in the sale of false credits to Banco Regional de Brasília.
