Venezuelan Parliament unanimously approves amnesty law

by Marcelo Moreira

The Venezuelan Parliament unanimously approved this Thursday (20) a historic amnesty law. The measure should free hundreds of political prisoners detained during the 27 years of the Chavista government.

The text goes to the sanction of interim president Delcy Rodríguez, who governs under pressure from the United States after the capture of Nicolás Maduro and began the release process even before the amnesty proposal.

The law does not detail exactly which crimes would be eligible for amnesty, but it is confirmed that it grants it for involvement in political protests and “violent actions” that took place during the brief 2002 coup and demonstrations or elections in certain months of certain years.
