Guanipa is a political prisoner of the Chavista regime and has been imprisoned since May 2025 after questioning Nicolás Maduro’s victory in the 2024 elections, in an election marked by a lack of transparency and which the opposition claims to have won. The lawyer, who was also a deputy in the Venezuelan Parliament, is one of the oldest opponents of the country’s government. He had been released on Sunday, along with a group of other political prisoners, after almost a year in prison. The releases of the opposition figures come amid growing pressure faced by Delcy Rodríguez’s government to release hundreds of people whose detentions months or years ago have been linked to their political activities.
