The US House of Representatives approved this Wednesday (11) a bill called SAVE America Actwhich aims to impose strict requirements for American voter registration and voting. If approved by the Senate, the measure will change electoral legislation in all 50 states.
The initiative requires official identification to vote in federal elections, including presidential ones, and establishes new provisions aimed at strengthening security and preventing electoral fraud, according to its Republican creators.
President Trump has been campaigning for full approval of the proposal, arguing that the legislative reform will prevent what he considers fraudulent practices, citing alleged irregularities during the 2020 presidential elections.
Another point of the bill is the requirement that voters present a valid photo identification document before being able to vote, something that some states already require. It also imposes new rules for voting by mail, requiring voters to present a copy of a valid ID when mailing in their ballot.
The Republicans, who have a majority in the House of Representatives, voted as a bloc in favor of the proposal, which is part of one of Trump’s objectives to regulate elections, which, according to the Constitution, depend on the management of the states.
The measure passed with 218 votes in favor and 213 against, with Democrat Henry Cuellar of Texas as the only member of his party who voted in favor. The party has generally asserted that the measure would deprive millions of eligible voters of the right to vote in the United States.
The bill now heads to the Senate, where it faces a difficult path. Although Republicans control 53 seats, the initiative needs 60 votes to be approved. Two Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, have already expressed their opposition to the proposal.
