The Trump administration appointed a critic of the current Brazilian government and a far-right politician to a position that defines US policy towards Brazil. Darren Beattie will act as ‘senior advisor for policy towards Brazil’. The information is from the Reuters Agency.
The measure, which was announced this Friday (27), suggests that relations between the two largest democracies in the Western Hemisphere remain delicate, despite the recent rapprochement.
The politician was the center of a controversy amid the diplomatic crisis between the US and Brazil due to the trial of former president Jair Bolsonaro in the STF. He called the minister of the Federal Supreme Court, Alexandre de Moraes, the “main architect of the censorship and persecution of Bolsonaro”.
Darren Beattie is also acting assistant secretary of state for educational and cultural affairs.
