Reproduction/Federal Revenue 🔎 Federal Revenue rules allow foreigners without residence in Brazil to request registration with the CPF. The request can be made by the person themselves or by an attorney – someone with legal authorization to represent them. When contacted by g1, the Federal Revenue simply stated that the possibility of a foreigner requesting registration in the Individual Taxpayer Registry (CPF) is provided for in Normative Instruction 2,172/2024. The body also highlighted that any measure related to the CPF of a deceased foreign person — as is the case of Epstein — can only be requested by: inventor, spouse, partner or legal successor, in case there are assets to be inventoried in Brazil; or spouse, partner, relative or death pension beneficiary, if there are no assets to be inventoried in Brazil. Brazilian citizenship The billionaire even spoke with German businesswoman and investor Nicole Junkermann — whose name appears in several documents linked to the case — about the possibility of obtaining Brazilian citizenship. In an email exchange dated October 2011, Junkermann asked Epstein if he had ever considered this alternative. “Interesting idea, but visas can be a problem when traveling to other countries,” replied the billionaire. On the same day, they would have met at the Ritz, a luxury hotel from The Ritz-Carlton chain. Reproduction/US Department of Justice The Epstein case The scandal involving Jeffrey Epstein had been going on in American justice for years. The first formal accusations against the billionaire emerged in 2005, when the police in Palm Beach, Florida (USA), investigated him for sexual abuse of minors. At the time, he stated that the encounters were consensual and that he believed the victims were 18 years old. According to the indictment, the billionaire abused minors or recruited girls for sexual acts between 2002 and 2005. In 2008, he pleaded guilty to the crime of exploiting minors and signed an agreement to serve 13 months in prison and pay compensation to the victims. In February 2019, a Florida district judge ruled the agreement illegal. In July of the same year, Epstein was arrested and formally accused of child abuse and operating a sexual exploitation network. According to the indictment, between 2002 and 2005, Epstein paid hundreds of dollars for girls to come to his properties and perform sexual acts. Young women were also encouraged to recruit other girls with the same goal. Dozens of women have accused Epstein of forcing them to provide sexual services to him and guests on a private island in the Caribbean and at homes he maintained in New York, Florida and New Mexico. According to the US government, the billionaire sexually exploited more than 250 underage girls. At the time, federal prosecutors argued that Epstein should remain in prison until trial. They stated that the businessman’s “exorbitant wealth”, in addition to his ownership of private planes and the international ties he maintained, could facilitate an escape. Epstein was found dead in prison in August 2019. An autopsy concluded that he took his own life. Two days before he died, the billionaire signed a will leaving an estate valued at more than US$577 million. After the businessman’s death, the charges against him were dropped. However, prosecutors said they could hold other people involved in the scheme responsible. Lawyers for the victims also promised to seek compensation in court.
