US announces new sanctions on Iran after round of nuclear deal talks

Among the ships are the flags of Türkiye, India and the United Arab Emirates, according to a statement from the State Department. Ministry spokesman Tommy Pigott stated that Iran uses oil revenues to “finance destabilizing activities around the world and intensify repression within the country”. According to him, President Donald Trump is committed to reducing the Iranian regime’s illicit exports of oil and petrochemicals as part of the administration’s maximum pressure campaign. Since Trump’s first term, between 2017 and 2021, the United States has imposed sanctions to try to force other countries to stop purchasing Iranian oil. This Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Trump envoys in Oman to discuss the country’s nuclear program. Araghchi said the meeting took place in a “positive atmosphere”. The talks come after the Iranian government violently suppressed some of the biggest protests since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Trump has also threatened to use force against Iran and expanded the American military presence near the Iranian coast.
