The British government announced this Monday (16) that it will tighten digital security rules, starting to explicitly include artificial intelligence chatbots in legislation. The measure comes after the repercussion of the case involving Grok, an AI tool on platform X, controlled by Elon Musk, associated with the creation of nude images.
Since January, Ofcom, the British regulatory body, has been conducting an investigation to determine whether X, formerly Twitter, failed to adopt adequate measures to protect minors and remove illegal content. The episode intensified pressure for more rigorous changes in the supervision of digital platforms.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the government’s priority is to close loopholes that could expose children to online risks, stressing that no company will be beyond the reach of oversight. Furthermore, the government intends to add provisions to the bill on child welfare that allow for quick responses, in a matter of months, given the rapid advancement of technologies.
