A protest was scheduled in the center of Rio de Janeiro for this Thursday (26) by the Oil Workers Union of Rio (Sindipetro-RJ), with the support of other union centers.
After the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro by the US in January, the Caribbean island began to find it more difficult to supply itself with petroleum products. In addition to interrupting Venezuelan aid, Donald Trump’s government threatened countries that provide fuel to Cuba with sanctions, citing the alleged threat that the regime would pose to the USA.

The Single Federation of Oil Workers (FUP) sent a letter to the Executive Directorate of Logistics, Commercialization and Markets of Petrobras requesting recognition of the “humanitarian risks” of the island remaining without energy assistance from Brazil. “In view of the recent worsening of commercial and energy restrictions that have directly impacted the supply of that country, generating humanitarian risks and compromising essential services, we understand that it is essential to dialogue institutionally about viable alternatives, regulatory and operational aspects, as well as possible cooperation paths that can be built based on principles of solidarity, sovereignty and social responsibility”, says the FUP document.
For Sindipetro-RJ, one week of Petrobras production would be enough to help Cuba for a year. “We are able to help, hence our demand to the Lula government and Petrobrás. Cuba’s annual oil needs amount to less than a week of Petrobrás’ production,” the union wrote.
