An accident marked the end of the União de Maricá parade, in the Rio de Janeiro Carnival Gold Series. A float hit the railings at Marquês de Sapucaí and left at least three employees injured — one of them in serious condition.
The accident happened at the end of the presentation. After accelerating to try not to exceed the regulatory time, the last float hit the railings in sector 12, at the point where the gate would be closed. Members of the support team tried to maneuver the float, but revelers began shouting that there was a man trapped under the structure. At least three people were pressed. An employee suffered an open fracture and was transferred to the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital. Another victim suffered minor injuries and was released at the scene. The rest were rescued by ambulances.
Due to the confusion, people who were in the dispersion and in sector 12 became ill and needed treatment at the Sapucaí medical center. There was also a fire in another car at the school, which contributed to the concentration of members in the area. This is the third accident of its kind in the last decade in Sapucaí. In 2017, the case involved Paraíso do Tuiuti. In 2022, the accident involved Em Cima da Hora, when a girl died.
