The Security Council of the United Nations (UN) will meet urgently this Saturday (28). The meeting will discuss the situation in Iran following attacks by the United States and Israel, the rotating presidency confirmed to EFE. The United Kingdom chairs the body for the last time before the transition. The United States assumes the presidency in March.
The presidency reported that several members requested the emergency meeting. The request led to the immediate convening of the Council. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for “an immediate end to hostilities”. He advocated an urgent de-escalation of the conflict.
Guterres warned of the risk of a regional conflict. According to him, the consequences can be unpredictable without containment measures.
In Europe, European Union ambassadors will participate in an extraordinary meeting on Sunday. The meeting comes after attacks against Iran and the Iranian military response. The Cypriot rotating presidency of the EU Council confirmed the Coreper meeting. Coreper brings together the permanent representatives of the Member States.
Before the meeting, the EU will promote a virtual consular meeting. The group will assess the situation of European citizens in the region.

In the last few hours, Iran has expanded its military response. The country attacked American bases in the Middle East. Tehran also launched at least six waves of missiles at Israel. The action followed a US and Israeli operation this Saturday.
Attacks on Iranian territory left dozens dead. Official sources cited 53 girls dead at a school.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the outfits “very worrying.” She called for immediate restraint. The president of the European Council, António Costa, made the same appeal. Both defended the preservation of the non-proliferation regime.
EU High Representative Kaja Kallas announced the withdrawal of non-essential personnel. According to her, the consular network works to facilitate the departure of European citizens.
