The Ukrainian Air Force has begun employing French Dassault Mirage 2000 fighters in ground attack missions against Russian force positions.

The information was broadcast by the Telegram channel “Sunflower”, associated with the Ukrainian military aviation, which also published a video presented as the first combat action of the aircraft in an offensive role on the front line.

Images show the dropping of two high-precision guided bombs AASM Hammer against a land target in one of the sectors of the front.

So far, according to previous official statements, the Mirage 2000 transferred to Ukraine were mainly used for air defense missions, intercepting Russian cruise missiles and drones.

“We thank France for its continued support of our army, as well as for its modern and high-quality weapons,” the channel wrote in its publication.

Change of operational profile

This broadcast marks the first video made public of an air-to-ground strike carried out by a Mirage 2000 operated by Ukraine.

The introduction of AASM Hammer bombs broadens the spectrum of employment of the platform, which can now also act as a precision strike vector against fortified land targets or logistical concentrations.

In addition to guided bombs, Ukrainian Mirage 2000s use French MBDA MICA and Matra Magic II air-to-air missiles to engage aerial targets, thereby strengthening the country’s airspace defense capabilities.

Deliveries and training

It was recently confirmed that Ukraine is expected to receive two additional aircraft from France by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

These units will be added to the three delivered last year. However, one was lost over the summer, bringing the operational total to at least four fighters by the end of 2026.

The transfer of the new aircraft is accompanied by an expanded training program for pilots and maintenance teams. Currently, three Ukrainian pilots are training in France to operate the Mirage 2000.

With the increase in the number of aircraft and the integration of precision guided munitions, the Mirage 2000 is expected to take on a more versatile role within the Ukrainian Air Force structure, combining air defense and surgical strike capability on the battlefield.
