The Ukrainian Air Force has begun employing French Dassault Mirage 2000 fighters in ground attack missions against Russian force positions.

The information was released by the Telegram channel “Sunflower”, associated with the Ukrainian Air Force, which also published a video which, according to what it said, would show the first combat action of the aircraft in an offensive role on the front line.

The images show the launch of two high-precision guided bombs AASM Hammer against a ground target in one of the sectors of the front line.

Until now, according to previous official releases, i Mirage 2000 transferred to Ukraine they had been used mainly in air defense missions, intercepting Russian cruise missiles and drones.

“We thank France for the continued support of our army, as well as for the modern and high-quality weapons,” the channel wrote in its publication.

Change of operational profile

The release marks the first publicly available video recording of an air-to-ground attack carried out by a Ukrainian-operated Mirage 2000.

The introduction of the AASM Hammer bombs broadens the spectrum of use of the platform, which can now also operate as a precision attack vector against fortified ground targets or logistical concentrations.

In addition to guided bombs, Ukrainian Mirage 2000s use French air-to-air missiles MBDA MICA and Matra Magic II to engage aerial targets, strengthening the country’s airspace defense capability.

Deliveries and training

It was recently confirmed that Ukraine is expected to receive two additional aircraft from France by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

These units will be added to the three aircraft delivered last year. However, one of them was lost over the summer, which is expected to bring the operational total to at least four fighters by the end of 2026.

The transfer of the new aircraft is accompanied by an expanded training program for pilots and maintenance personnel. Currently, three Ukrainian pilots are training in France to operate the Mirage 2000.

With the increase in the number of aircraft and the integration of precision guided munition, the Mirage 2000 tends to take on a more versatile role within the structure of the Ukrainian Air Force, combining air defense and surgical strike capabilities on the battlefield.
