The Ukrainian Air Force has begun deploying French Dassault Mirage 2000 fighter jets for ground attacks on Russian troop positions.

The information was shared by the Telegram channel “Sunflower”, which is affiliated with the Ukrainian military aviation. The channel also published a video that it claims shows the aircraft’s first combat deployment in an offensive role at the front.

The images show the dropping of two highly accurate AASM Hammer-guided bombs on a ground target in one of the frontline sectors.

Until now, they have been transferred to Ukraine Mirage 2000aircraft, according to previous official statements, were mainly used for air defense missions, during which they intercepted Russian cruise missiles and drones.

“We thank France for the continued support of our army, as well as modern and high-quality weapons,” the channel wrote in its message.

Change in operational profile

The publication marks the first publicly available video recording of an air-to-ground attack carried out by a Mirage 2000 deployed by Ukraine.

The introduction of AASM Hammer bombs extends the operational spectrum of the platform, which can now also act as a precision strike asset against fortified ground targets or logistics concentrations.

In addition to the guided bombs, the Ukrainian Mirage 2000 aircraft also use French MBDA MICA and Matra Magic II air-to-air missiles to engage air targets, strengthening the country’s air defense capabilities.

Deliveries and training

It was recently confirmed that Ukraine will receive two additional aircraft from France by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

These will be added to the three aircraft delivered last year. However, one was lost in the summer, which is expected to bring the operational total to at least four fighter aircraft by the end of 2026.

The transfer of the new aircraft is accompanied by an extensive training program for pilots and maintenance personnel. Three Ukrainian pilots are currently undergoing training in France to operate the Mirage 2000.

With the growing number of aircraft and the integration of precision-guided munitions, the Mirage 2000 is expected to take on a more versatile role within the structure of the Ukrainian Air Force, combining air defense with targeted strike capabilities on the battlefield.
