Ukraine intends to use part of a $107.1 billion loan approved by the European Union to purchase Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets and strengthen its air defense system.

This information was confirmed by Swedish Minister of Defense Pål Jonson after a meeting with the new Ukrainian representative Mykhailo Fedorov.
The financial package was approved in emergency mode by the European Parliament and includes 90 billion euros for the period 2026 to 2027. Of this amount, 35.7 billion USD will be allocated to macro-financial assistance and budget support through the European Support Mechanism for Ukraine, while 71.4 billion USD will be reserved for the strengthening of military capabilities and the purchase of defense equipment.
According to Jonson, a specific date for the purchase of fighter jets has not yet been determined. The Swedish government is also negotiating with other countries about possible shares in the co-financing of the project, in a period described as an intensive phase of diplomatic and technical negotiations.
In October 2025, Ukraine and Sweden signed a letter of intent, paving the way for a formal aircraft supply contract Gripen. Kyiv expects to receive the first units of the planned 150 fighter jets as early as 2026. At the signing, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the agreement the beginning of long-term cooperation that could last up to 15 years, including local production of aircraft on Ukrainian territory.
