Trump threatens Iran with “hard phase 2” if no nuclear deal

by Marcelo Moreira

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, threatened this Thursday (12) the Iranian regime by stating that, if an agreement is not reached on the Iranian nuclear program, Washington will activate a “very tough phase two” against Tehran. The statement was made during a press conference at the White House, after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Asked about the meeting with Netanyahu and whether he had discussed suspending talks with the Iranian regime, Trump stated that the topic was not discussed.

“I’ll talk to them (the Iranians) as much as I want and we’ll see if we can reach an agreement with them. And if we can’t, we’ll have to move to phase two. Phase two will be very tough for them,” he declared.

According to the American president, the priority continues to be reaching a nuclear agreement. He stated that, without understanding, the scenario could be “very traumatic” for Iran.

“I don’t want this to happen, but we have to reach an agreement,” he added.

According to Trump, the Iranian regime “should have reached a deal the first time.” He cited the “Midnight Hammer” operation – called “Midnight Hammer” in Portuguese – in which the United States bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities in June last year, during the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel.

The president also declared that the final decision on the viability of the agreement will be up to him.

“If (the Iranians) don’t reach a deal, it will be another story. But yesterday we had a very good meeting with ‘Bibi’ Netanyahu, and he understands that, but ultimately it’s up to me to decide whether the deal is fair,” he said.

Negotiations between the United States and Iran resumed last week, according to official information, in the first meeting since last year’s conflict. Israel demands that Tehran limit uranium enrichment, reduce its ballistic missile program and end support for armed groups in the region. The Iranian regime, in turn, claims that it will only accept restrictions on its nuclear program in exchange for relief from international sanctions.
