Trump suggests agreement with Cuba and talks about return of freedom

US President Donald Trump suggested on Saturday night (31) that he could reach an “agreement” with Cuba after the announcement of tariffs on countries that supply it with oil and said he trusts that the island “will be free again”.

The Republican made these statements aboard Air Force One when the press questioned him about the words of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who warned that cutting off oil supplies to Cuba will provoke a humanitarian crisis.

“There is no reason for there to be a humanitarian crisis. I believe they will probably come to us and want to make an agreement. Then, Cuba will be free again. They will come to us and make an agreement,” said the president.

The Republican highlighted that Cuba is in “a very bad situation” because it “lived off money and oil from Venezuela, but none of that is coming” since the US captured Nicolás Maduro on January 3.

He further added that Sheinbaum was “very good” because, according to him, she asked Mexico to also stop sending oil to the island and she agreed.

Trump on Thursday signed an executive order to impose tariffs on countries that supply the island with oil. The Cuban regime classified the measure as “fascist”, which in practice means an energy strangulation for the island, and Sheinbaum announced that Mexico will seek “different alternatives” to support the Cuban people.
