Trump increases meat purchases from Argentina by 80 thousand tons

by Marcelo Moreira

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed a decree this Friday (6) expanding the import of Argentine meat with tariff exemption. The temporary measure allows the purchase of an additional 80,000 tons of lean beef trimmings – scraps that are usually left over from the deboning process – from Argentina per year.

The text justifies that the measure was necessary due to challenges in American livestock farming, involving factors such as a record drop in the country’s herd (the stock of cattle heads fell 8.6% since 2020), drought and forest fires and restrictions on the import of Mexican cattle for sanitary reasons, which led to the highest price of ground beef since the beginning of the historical series in the 1980s.

“The United States is the world’s largest consumer of beef by volume and ranks second globally in per capita beef consumption, highlighting the importance of beef to the American diet. The President is taking steps to strengthen the domestic supply of affordable beef for American consumers as these challenges persist,” the text explains.

American government data cited by the agency Reuters show that the US imported around 33 thousand metric tons of Argentine beef in 2024, which represents 2% of total imports.
