Trump defies Supreme Court and increases tariff to 15%

by Marcelo Moreira

United States President Donald Trump announced this Saturday (21) that he will impose a 15% global tariff on imported products, one day after the American Supreme Court overturned his previous taxes on imports.

On Friday (20), after the court’s decision, Trump said he would replace the invalidated tariffs with a 10% rate on all goods entering the country. This Saturday, however, he raised the tone and the percentage: in a publication on the Truth Social network, he reported that the rate will be 15%.

The new rates come into effect on Tuesday (24), but will only remain in force for around five months. After this period, the government will need to seek approval from Congress to maintain them.

In his message, Trump called the Supreme Court decision “ridiculous, poorly written and extraordinarily un-American.” He also stated that the measure will continue his “extraordinarily successful process of Making America Great Again — BIGGER THAN EVER!!!”
