USS Gerald R. Fordthe world’s most powerful warship, is being moved from the Caribbean Sea to the Middle East as part of a US move amid rising tensions with Iran.

The move of Ford will strengthen an already significant US naval presence in the region. The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln currently operating in the area along with three guided missile destroyers.

according to UK Defence Journal the decision will place “two aircraft carriers and their accompanying warships in the region” and thus increase US military weight at a time when regional governments have warned of the risk of escalation.

A source also described the move as an attempt by the US president Donald Trump to put further pressure on Iran to conclude “an agreement on its nuclear program”.

Ford was recently stationed in the Caribbean and allegedly took part in a US operation to capture the president of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro.

With two US aircraft carriers now operating in or near the Arabian Sea, the US will be positioned to conduct sustained air operations, maritime security missions and deterrence patrols throughout the region if necessary.
