Slovakia has secured a $250 million contract to supply up to 300 AM-120 120mm automatic mortar systems to Azerbaijan, in one of the largest recent deals in the European country’s defense industry.
The deal, signed between the Slovak state-owned company ZŤS Špeciál and the Azerbaijani company Iglin Scientific Production Enterprise, provides for the initial delivery of 96 units, while the rest remain as an additional option.
Production will begin immediately, and the first example is expected to be displayed at a defense fair in Baku later this year.
In addition to acquiring the systems, Azerbaijan is negotiating the possibility of obtaining a license to manufacture the AM-120 locally, whether partially or fully, expanding its industrial autonomy in the military sector.

The AM-120 has a range that varies from 504 meters to 8.6 kilometers and can fire between 18 and 20 projectiles per minute thanks to the automated loading system. Installed on a Tatra 6×6 heavy truck and protected by a Puma L2 Long armored cabin, the equipment carries up to 60 rounds of ammunition on board, allowing prolonged fire support in mobile operations.
Despite the technical capabilities, experts question the adoption of a heavy and large chassis for a relatively short-range system, especially given the growing presence of reconnaissance and attack drones on the battlefield. Still, the contract reinforces military cooperation between Bratislava and Baku, which has increased investments in artillery and indirect fire systems as part of its modernization strategy.
