Despite having lost in the general result of Portugal’s presidential elections, right-wing representative André Ventura repeated his victory against his political opponent, socialist António Seguro, outside the country.
In Brazil, for example, the leader of the Chega party obtained 4,269 votes (58.73%) against 3,000 (41.27%) for Seguro. Of the more than 300,000 Portuguese residents in the country and Brazilians with dual citizenship registered to vote, only 7,308 people went to the polls. The vote it is not mandatory in Portugal.
The second electoral round had around two thousand fewer people than the first round, when just over five thousand voters attended the polls, which was already considered a low turnout.
In total, there are ten Portuguese voting centers operating in Brazil. According to data from the National Elections Commission (CNE), São Paulo gathered the largest number of voters and Ventura won with 58.58% support against 41.42% for the socialist.
But the advantage did not only occur in Brazil. The right-wing candidate won again in the second round among Portuguese voters living outside the country with 51.88% against 48.12% in favor of Seguro, who was in fact elected president of Portugal this Sunday (8).
According to the CNE, although the new vote registered a slight increase in participation, only 4.74% of voters eligible to vote went to the polls outside the country.
The high abstention was a hallmark of the entire electoral process in Portugal this weekend: 49.89% of voters did not vote. António José Seguro was elected president of Portugal with 66.7% of the valid votes against 33.3% for Ventura.
The socialist reached almost 3.5 million votes, becoming the most voted candidate in the country’s history in absolute numbers.
