Rescuers brave winter storm to rescue 6 survivors of avalanche in California; another 9 are missing

The skiers were on the final day of a three-day off-piste ski traverse, said Steve Reynaud, an avalanche forecaster with the Sierra Avalanche Center for the Tahoe National Forest, who was in contact with people at the scene. He said the group spent two nights in huts on a journey that required crossing “rugged mountainous terrain” for up to 4 miles, carrying all their food and supplies.
