In a single weekend, two strong demonstrations marked the position of Pope Leo
The statement was made during an audience at the Vatican with participants in a humanitarian meeting and took up the words of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, frequently cited by sectors that defend the full protection of the unborn child. For the pontiff, it is not possible to talk about true peace while society accepts the elimination of the most vulnerable and naturalizes the exclusion of those who have not yet had the chance to be born.
Deepening the argument, the pope warned that humanity wages a “war against itself” when it discards the fragile, ignores the poor and remains indifferent to the suffering of refugees and oppressed peoples.
According to Leo XIV, no public policy can be considered legitimate if it denies the right to life or refuses to offer material and spiritual support to women in difficult situations. He also once again criticized the use of public resources to finance abortion, arguing that state funds should be directed to supporting mothers and protecting life from conception.
This Sunday (1st), one day after the strong demonstration on abortion, the Pope expressed “great concern” about the escalation of tensions between the United States and Cuba. The warning comes amid the tightening of the US government’s discourse, which once again threatened Havana with more severe sanctions, including in the energy sector, following geopolitical movements involving allies of the Cuban regime.
Without relativizing the authoritarian nature of the island’s government, the pontiff highlighted that political and economic clashes end up affecting, above all, the civilian population, already severely affected by successive crises. Aligning himself with the position of the Cuban bishops, Leo XIV made a direct appeal to international leaders to seek dialogue and avoid actions that increase the suffering of the Cuban people.
For the pope, peace requires responsibility, prudence and a real willingness to negotiate, especially between neighboring countries historically marked by ideological rivalries. He also expressed the hope that major international events, such as the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games, could serve as an occasion for concrete gestures of detente, resuming the spirit of the Olympic truce as a symbol of fraternity between nations.
