In Panama, Lula gives an indirect speech to Trump. Interlocutors at Palácio do Planalto believe that themes related to the geopolitical scenario will play a leading role during this year’s electoral campaign. One of the reasons, according to government officials, is the complexity of the international situation and the scenario of instability amid tensions in Venezuela, the Gaza Strip, Greenland and Ukraine. Themes like these have been recalled by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in speeches and public statements over the last few years. The current context of geopolitical instability, marked by regional conflicts, trade disputes and uncertainties about the reorganization of the international order, led President Lula to intensify contacts with foreign leaders at the beginning of this year. In January alone, there were 14 phone calls with heads of state to discuss international politics, including Vladimir Putin (Russia), Xi Jinping (China), Donald Trump (United States) and Emmanuel Macron (France). According to Planalto, this was the highest number of calls made to presidents and prime ministers of other countries in a single month over the last few terms. Sources interviewed by GloboNews assess that the external agenda maintained by Lula — through international trips and conversations with world leaders — strengthens Brazil’s dialogue on the international scene and contributes to the construction of strategic partnerships on topics with a direct impact on the country. Camarotti: Lula tries to neutralize speech about a difficult relationship with Donald Trump Expectation of a new meeting with Trump The Brazilian government assesses that the next face-to-face meeting between presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Donald Trump should focus on topics of bilateral interest and the relationship with Latin America. Brazilian diplomatic sources interviewed by GloboNews state that Brazil is interested in addressing three main issues: ▶️ the fight against organized crime; ▶️ the continuity of negotiations on Brazilian products still affected by the tariff; ▶️ the situation in Latin America. Interlocutors at Palácio do Planalto believe that the face-to-face conversation between Lula and Trump will be important to organize and reinforce the bilateral relationship between the countries. The meeting should take place in March, with no date set yet. The themes highlighted by the Brazilian government were also mentioned in the last telephone conversation between the two presidents. Trip to Panama This Wednesday (28), President Lula is traveling to Panama to participate in the Latin American Economic Forum and fulfill two bilateral agendas, as announced by Palácio do Planalto. The meetings will be with: ▶️ the president of Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz, who took office in place of Luis Arce in November last year; ▶️ the president of Panama, José Raúl Mulino. Among the main topics discussed in the conversations are: ▶️ the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union; ▶️ the proposal to create a Peace Council presented by the President of the United States, Donald Trump; ▶️ the situation of political tension in Venezuela. Furthermore, Lula also met with José Antonio Kast, president-elect of Chile, during an economic event in Panama. The Brazilian government has sought to defend multilateralism and increase the country’s role in debates on peace, security and international trade. Brazil has already been highlighted by European leaders as a country capable of contributing to stability in Latin America. Lula has defended the maintenance of countries’ sovereignty and respect for international law in the face of territorial and tariff threats made by Trump to Europe and other countries, without, however, adopting a tone of direct confrontation with the North American government. Since the announcement of the “tariff”, the two presidents have maintained dialogue, despite differences. In this context, during a telephone conversation held this week, a meeting was agreed between Lula and Trump in Washington, scheduled for March. At the meeting, the Brazilian president must reinforce the bilateral relationship and trade between the two countries, in addition to defending the prevalence of international law in relations between States.
