This Friday (20), the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) spoke out against the house arrest of Jair Bolsonaro, requested by the former president’s defense.
According to prosecutor Paulo Gonet, the treatment can continue to be carried out in the unit where Bolsonaro is detained, in Complexo da Papuda, and there is no change in the facts that justifies reviewing previous decisions that denied the benefit.
The prosecutor’s office also highlights that adequate treatment is already offered in the 19th Battalion prison in Complexo da Papuda, with 24-hour support and an advanced SAMU unit. The agency highlights that preventive adjustments and multidisciplinary monitoring can reduce cardiovascular and neurological risks, but this does not make the prison environment inadequate.
The opinion reinforces previous decisions of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), which restrict house arrest to cases in which medical treatment cannot be carried out in the custody unit.
The defense of Bolsonaro justified the request for humanitarian house arrest alleging that the former president presents “progressive physiological deterioration” and faces an imminent risk to his life. The lawyers argued that the prison regime would not be suitable for carrying out the ongoing therapies necessary for the prisoner.
Jair Bolsonaro is currently imprisoned in the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, known as Papudinha. The former president has been in prison since November 24 for an attempted coup d’état.
