North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has officially unveiled a new 600-millimeter launcher capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

According to the state-run KCNA news agency, Kim said the weapon was used as a deterrent against unnamed enemies. He added emphatically that if deployed, “no force can count on God’s protection,” thus underscoring the symbolic and strategic importance of the new tool in Pyongyang’s official rhetoric.
The presentation took place amid accelerated missile tests in recent years. South Korean analysts believe that the primary target of the newly manufactured missiles could be South Korea, which is considered the North’s main adversary. Last month, Pyongyang claimed to have shot down a South Korean surveillance drone, further raising bilateral tensions.
The incident also put pressure on South Korean President Lee Jae-myong’s efforts to improve relations between the two countries.
Kim Yo Jong, the North Korean leader’s younger sister, said she appreciated Seoul’s pledge to avoid further incursions. According to experts, the progress of the military program serves to expand the precision strike capability, to challenge the United States and South Korea, and to test weapons systems with export potential, possibly to Russia as well.
